There is becoming an increasingly high demand for greener and more eco-friendly fuels in order to be emission compliant with regulations. There are new developments coming onto the market year on year, one of these being HVO.
HVO, or Hydrotreated vegetable oil, is a fossil-free alternative to mineral diesel. Sometimes known as Renewable Diesel, it results in up to a 90% reduction in Greenhouse gas emissions. Companies that use this alternative have a reduced carbon footprint and can help reach net zero.
HVO is a second-generation biofuel made from vegetable oil and is part of the paraffinic fuel family. The raw sources are processed using hydro-treatment to get high levels of purity. Due to it being a drop-in replacement for diesel, it is used across many industries including construction, automotive, agriculture and power generation. There are a number of benefits for this fuel including the fact that it has very similar properties to regular diesel, so there isn’t a need to drain or modify your fuel tank.
Although HVO can be slightly more expensive than traditional diesel, it is shown to deliver more efficiency, which in the long term, can reduce engine maintenance and repair costs. In addition to this, lots of other low-carbon energy options require a significant upfront capital expenditure. Electric and hybrid generators for example are approximately 3 to 5 times more expensive than current equipment. The use of HVO is a great way to reduce emissions without having to spend a great deal of money.
